MOBILITY & ROAD SAFETY

WHAT ABOUT WEZEMBEEK-OPPEM?

Is safety on the road and mobility a priority for the majority in our municipality?

THE FACTS

In a livable municipality or city, homes, work, schools and shops are easily accessible by various means of transport. A well-developed network, even so for pedestrians and cyclists, encourages sustainable travel. In the vicinity of schools, the routes are car-free or at low speed. Parkingplace is tailored to residents, commuters and visitors.

A well-developed and safe soft mobility network can encourage residents to cycle. But do the residents think it is safe to cycle in Wezembeek-Oppem?

The survey by our residents in 2023 reveals:

  • only 48% find the route to school by bicycle safe;
  • only 41% think the cycling infrastructure is sufficient or satisfactory;
  • only 44% are satisfied with the condition of the cycle and pedestrian paths in our municipality.
  • 48% think Wezembeek traffic is safe enough for children to go to school alone.

The number of bicycle lanes and bicycle parking spaces are inadequate and the bicycle lanes are poorly maintained.The pedestrian crossings are also inadequately lit and not visible enough.

WHAT DOES WOPLUS STAND FOR?

Safety is not only a right, it is our top priority. At WO-plus, we are determined to take concrete actions that make our municipality safer, and we desperately need your support.

We are pleased that the number of road casualties is low in our municipality, but we want to keep it that way. That’s why we’re striving for:

  • better maintained footpaths and pedestrian crossings
  • with improved lighting for safe walking,
  • and safer crossings.

We also strive for thoughtful management with a constant focus on improving the maintenance of traffic infrastructure and addressing any nuisance obstacles in a more targeted way.

The current mobility plan is based on limited data. That is why WO-Plus wants a continuous monitoring (e.g. via the “Telraam” application) from which it can be learned where any adjustments are necessary.

We remain vigilant to minimize cut-through traffic and turn residential areas into safe living environments where children can play outside with no worry and local residents will have peace and quiet.

The current mobility plan is based on too limited data. Therefore, WOPlus wants continuous monitoring (by e.g. through the ‘counting windows’ application) from which to learn what, if any, adjustments are needed where.

We also want to provide the necessary charging station infrastructure then and electric scooters will be allocated a safer location.

Let’s strive together for a safer and more liveable mobile Wezembeek-Oppem. Your safety comes first. Vote for safe traffic. Vote for progress. Vote for a stronger, safer Wezembeek-Oppem. Vote WOplus.
